Basti :
Colon Purification and Rejuvenation

Basti is valuable. While vamana, nasya and virechana together contribute fifty-percent of the panchakarma benefits, basti, by itself provides the other fifty percent. Though basti imparts a direct effect on the colon, its influence is far reaching through rest of the body organs and systems. This is because of the crucial linkages colon has to the rest of the body.

What Does Basti Do?

It is highly recommended for vata-related problems and helps relieve condition such as:

  • Low back pain

  • Gout

  • Arthritis

  • Rheumatism

  • Neuromuscular disorders

  • Sciatica

  • Chronic constipation

  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Nerve and muscle atrophy and dystrophy

On account of its multiple benefits, administration of basti karma depends on the site of body that is affected. If basti is to be used to correct any gynaecological problem, then you wouldhave to have uttara basti. For low back pain, you will have to have katti basti. To give a soothing feeling to your eyes or coorect any visual acuity, the type of basti given would be netra basti. In the same way, uro basti would be used for chest or heart-related problems, shiro basti for problems related to head, mutrashaya gata basti for penile and urethral problems, and vranagata basti for healing wounds or abscesses.

Not only that, basti can be administered according to the function it performs. Say, if you want to have a nourishing basti, then you will have to have bruhan basti; for palliative basti, you will have to have shamana basti and for cleansing and detoxification, you will have to have shodhana basti.
